In the selection process for the Pakistan Army, Navy, and Air Force, the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) is a standardized score derived from your performance in the Verbal and Non-Verbal Intelligence Tests. It is the first critical filter in both the Initial Test and the Inter Services Selection Board (ISSB) stages. It is designed to evaluate a candidate’s mental sharpness, logical reasoning, and ability to process information quickly. The OIR test is divided into two main sections: Verbal Intelligence and Non-Verbal Intelligence. Each section assesses different aspects of intelligence and cognitive ability. OIR Test Structure

The OIR test consists of two sections: Verbal Intelligence and Non-Verbal Intelligence. Candidates must perform well in both sections to pass the test.

Verbal Intelligence Test

This section tests your linguistic reasoning and ability to think logically with words and numbers. The key question types include:

• Number & Alpha Series: Completing patterns or sequences (e.g., 2, 4, 6, ___).
• Analogy: Identifying relationships between words (e.g., Sun is to Day as Moon is to Night).
• Coding & Decoding: Translating words or numbers into codes.
• Blood Relations: Solving family relationship puzzles (e.g., “A is the father of B. B is the brother of C. What is the relationship between A and C?”).
• Direction Sense: Determining final directions after multiple turns.
• Odd One Out (Classification): Finding the word that doesn’t belong to a group.
• Common Sense & Arithmetic: Basic math and logical reasoning problems.

Scoring for Verbal Intelligence:
You earn 1 mark for each correct answer and 0 marks for incorrect or unanswered questions.

Non-Verbal Intelligence Test

This section tests your spatial reasoning, pattern recognition, and ability to solve problems involving diagrams and figures. The main question types are:

• Pattern Completion: Finding the missing part of a diagram or figure.
• Figure Matrix: Solving grids of shapes (3×3 matrix) based on logical patterns.
• Mirror & Water Images: Visualizing how a shape appears when reflected in a mirror or water.
• Paper Cutting & Folding: Predicting the final pattern when a folded paper is cut.
• Embedded Figures: Identifying a small shape hidden inside a larger shape.
• Cubes & Dice: Visualizing different sides of a 3D object.

Scoring for Non-Verbal Intelligence:
You earn 1 mark for each correct answer and 0 marks for incorrect or unanswered questions.

OIR Score Calculation

The OIR score is calculated by adding up the marks obtained in both the Verbal and Non-Verbal sections. Here’s how to calculate it:

1. Verbal Section Score: The number of correct answers in the Verbal Intelligence section.
2. Non-Verbal Section Score: The number of correct answers in the Non-Verbal Intelligence section.

Total OIR Score = Verbal Section Marks + Non-Verbal Section Marks

For example, if a candidate answers 60 questions correctly in the Verbal section and 50 questions correctly in the Non-Verbal section, their OIR Score will be:

OIR Score = 60 (Verbal) + 50 (Non-Verbal) = 110 marks

Passing Criteria and Merit Selection

Passing Criteria: 60% OIR

To pass the OIR test and move to the next stage in the selection process, candidates must achieve at least 60% in the OIR test. This means:

• Minimum Score for Passing:
  If the total number of marks in the OIR test is 150 (86 Verbal + 64 Non-Verbal), a candidate needs to score at least 90 marks to meet the 60% passing requirement.

Merit and Final Selection: 90% OIR

While passing the OIR test is essential, final selection and merit ranking require a higher score. To be placed on the merit list for final selection, candidates must score at least 90% in the OIR test. This translates to:

• Minimum Score for Merit Selection:
  To be eligible for final selection, candidates should aim for at least 135 marks out of the 150 total available marks in the OIR test.

The higher your OIR score, the better your chances of merit-based selection. Scoring above 90% will place you in a competitive position for final selection in the Pakistan Army, Navy, or Air Force.
