AFNS Physical and Medical Requirements

Becoming an officer in the Armed Forces Nursing Service AFNS offers a respected career path for women within military healthcare. The Pakistan Army uses a rigorous selection process to make sure that only the most qualified candidates, including those applying for the AFNS program, join the armed forces.

This lecture covers the physical and medical requirements for individuals aiming to join the AFNS in the Pakistan Army. These requirements are established to ensure that candidates are mentally and emotionally prepared for the challenges of military life and physically fit to meet the demands of nursing within a military environment.
AFNS Physical Requirements
The physical requirements are crucial for ensuring that candidates can perform the demanding tasks required of military nurses. As a nurse in the AFNS, you will need to be prepared to handle a range of physical tasks, including providing patient care in emergency settings, running, carrying equipment, and working in austere environments.
AFNS Height & Weight:
- Minimum Height: The minimum height for female candidates is 5 feet (152.4 cm). This is one of the primary physical requirements for entry into AFNS. The height requirement ensures that candidates are physically capable of carrying out the tasks required of military personnel.
- Weight: Your weight must be in proportion to your height, assessed using the Body Mass Index (BMI). A healthy BMI is necessary because it indicates that you have the right body composition to handle the physical demands of military and nursing duties. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered the normal range for health. If your weight is too high or too low relative to your height, you may be disqualified from the process.

AFNS Physical Fitness Test (PFT):
- The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is one of the most important components of the physical assessment for Army But AFNS Candiadtes Be Happy There Will be no Running, No Chin Ups, No Push Ups, No Ditch Crossing.

AFNS Medical Requirements
The medical examination is conducted to confirm that candidates meet the necessary health standards to handle the physical and mental demands of a military nursing career. The major medical assessments conducted during the initial and final medical exams are as follows:
AFNS Medical Initial Test Includes:
- Flat Feet:
- Candidates will be examined for flat feet (also known as pes planus). Flat feet can cause problems during physical activity or prolonged standing, so candidates with this condition may be disqualified.

- Eyesight Check:
- Visual acuity test: To ensure candidates meet the required standard for uncorrected vision (usually 6/6 vision in both eyes).
- Color Blindness Test: This is essential as color vision is crucial in many medical tasks. The Ishihara test or other color vision tests may be used.

- Knee Knock (Genu Valgum):
- A physical examination to check for “knock knees” (genu valgum), a condition where the knees touch but the ankles remain apart, which may affect movement and posture.

- No Tattoos or Cuts:
- Tattoos are often restricted in the military as they may not align with military dress standards or might pose health risks. Visible tattoos or cuts on certain body parts, like hands, neck, or face, may lead to disqualification.

- Throat Check:
- A general throat examination to ensure there are no abnormalities, infections, or conditions like tonsillitis or enlarged tonsils.

- DNS (Deviated Nasal Septum):
- A test to check for a deviated nasal septum, which may cause breathing problems. Severe cases may be disqualifying.

- Chest Deformation:
- The chest is examined for any deformities, including conditions like pectus excavatum (sunken chest) or pectus carinatum (pigeon chest), which can impact respiratory function.

- Piles (Hemorrhoids):
- Examination for piles (hemorrhoids), which are swollen blood vessels in the rectal area. Candidates with symptomatic or severe hemorrhoids might be disqualified.

- Posture:
- A check for proper posture to ensure no significant spinal deformities like scoliosis or kyphosis, which could interfere with physical activities or cause long-term issues.

- Fingers, Hands, and Feet:
- Evaluation of hands and feet to ensure no deformities or abnormalities that could interfere with daily tasks or physical activity.
- The fingers are also checked for proper movement and flexibility.

- Carrying Angle:
- The carrying angle is the angle formed between the upper arm and forearm when the arms are relaxed at the sides of the body. Abnormalities in the carrying angle may indicate skeletal issues or improper limb development.

AFNS Medical Final Test Includes:
- Heart and Circulation:
- Blood pressure: You must have normal blood pressure levels. High blood pressure (hypertension) is a disqualifying factor because it can be dangerous in high-stress environments.
- Heart health: The medical team will check for any abnormalities in the heart rate or rhythm. Conditions like arrhythmias or murmurs may disqualify you.

- Vision:
- Normal vision (6/6) is required. If you have poor vision, you must use corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses). A vision test will assess both near and far vision.
- You will also undergo a color blindness test, typically using the Ishihara color plates.

- Hearing:
- A hearing test is performed to ensure that you can hear and respond to commands or sounds in a military environment. Any hearing impairments may disqualify you.

- Lung and Respiratory Health:
- Lung function is tested to ensure that you do not suffer from chronic conditions like asthma or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). A spirometry test may be conducted to check for lung capacity.

- General Health Check:
- This includes blood tests, urine tests, and a general check-up for any underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, anemia, or infectious diseases. Chronic conditions like diabetes or high cholesterol may disqualify you.

No Chronic Conditions
- Asthma: Asthma or other chronic respiratory conditions will disqualify you from the AFNS, as they can interfere with your ability to perform physically demanding tasks.
- Diabetes: Diabetes is also a disqualifying factor due to the potential for complications during active duty, including issues with medication management or the impact of fluctuating blood sugar levels.
- Allergies: Severe or major allergies that may interfere with your ability to perform in military settings will also disqualify you.
Mental Health
- The mental fitness evaluation is crucial for ensuring you can handle the psychological demands of military service. This includes the ability to manage stress, make quick decisions in high-pressure environments, and work long hours without compromising your ability to care for others.
- You may undergo a psychological assessment to check for any signs of mental illness (such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD) that could affect your ability to serve effectively.
