What is AFNS?

The initial staffing of the AFNS was strongly influenced by the British military, especially the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service. The British Army played a crucial role in training and staffing the early AFNS.Colonel C is a respected military officer known for his commitment and leadership. 1964: A Pioneering Leader

One of the most pivotal moments in the history of AFNS was the appointment of Colonel Fatima Qureshi as the first Pakistani female director of the AFNS in 1964. Her leadership was instrumental in shaping the direction of the AFNS and solidifying its role within the broader army healthcare framework.

1956: Brigadier Nusrat Jehan’s Leadership

In 1956, Brigadier Nusrat Jehan joined the AFNS and later became its Director. Her leadership during the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars was particularly noteworthy. Under her guidance, the AFNS set high standards for wartime care, showcasing the professionalism, dedication, and skills of its nurses during critical times.

1959: Establishment of AFPGMI

Another milestone in the evolution of AFNS came in 1959 with the establishment of the Armed Forces Post Graduate Medical Institute (AFPGMI) in Rawalpindi. This institution was critical in providing training and certification for military medical personnel, including nurses. It laid the foundation for advanced training programs that helped nurses within the AFNS maintain high standards of healthcare, particularly in wartime conditions.

Role & Structure of the AFNS

All-Female Unit

The AFNS is constitutionally an all-female military nursing service dedicated exclusively to the service of women in the Pakistan Armed Forces.This unique structure creates a specialized and cohesive nursing unit that offers care to military personnel from all branches of the armed forces.

Training and Commissioning

To join the AFNS, candidates must complete rigorous training programs. Most candidates receive training for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing BSc Nursing or pursue specialized nursing courses. Upon completion of training, they are commissioned as officers in the Pakistan Army, earning the rank of Lieutenant and officially becoming part of the military structure. This commissioning process prepares nurses to deliver routine care and urgent medical services in challenging conditions.
